I thought it was simple in some ways, bu [...]

    2. This story takes place on Islamorada, one of the Florida Keys in 1935. Jake lives there with his sister, Star and his mom and dad, who run a general store on the island. Jake's friends include a grumpy old man known as Sharkey. Sharkey acquires a donkey named Jewel and a dog named Rudy, who are a problem at first, but become useful in many ways. There is also a girl named Mara who comes to live on the island, who becomes a friend to Jake. Then a hurricane bears down on the island and no one anti [...]

    3. Joan gave suspense, anticipation and lessons of life. She showed how friendship can come in unusual places. The setting was different, allowing my boys to visualize an island experience, complete with its dangers and beauties.

    4. It was really slow. It wasn't until like the 3/4 mark in the book that the storm actually came. It wasn't amazing for me but maybey you will connect more with Jake, Sharkey, Star and more. It was a lot about Jake helping a old guy sharkey. Yes that is his name. They start to get to like eachother and go on fishing tours. Then there is a hurricane. Will any of them survive?

    5. Book ReviewThis book takes place during the summer of 1935. The main character Jake, has an opportunity to help the best local fisherman, Sharkey with a trip to the Key West. They pick up some gator skins and most importantly a dog named Rudy and a mule named Jewel. When jake gets back he makes friends with the new girl in town Mara. Jakes family owns a store in the small town they live. One of the rich kids in the town decides he will hold a bonefish tournament and the winner gets to go with hi [...]

    6. My 9 year old son and I read this book as part of our Florida History study this year. It was about Jake who is a boy that lives in Islamodora. This is an Island that is off the Keys. His family and friends are affected by a big hurricane. They all were hurt and Jake's sister Star ended up with the sleeping sickness which made her sleep a lot.

    7. The book blown away is about two best friends name Jake and Sharkey. They are in Florida by Key Way. This is base on a real story that had happen. When they were running around they didn't know there was a storm heading there way. By the time they figure out the storm was coming Jake had to think of a plan base on how could you survive the storm. A meanwhile the storm is passing over they learned how to survive the storm that is passing over. Then they find out the storm have destroy their home. [...]

    8. This book was an excellent portrait of the Florida Keys in the early 1930's. I really became attached to the characters, especially Jewel the mule. I was touched by the love among Jake's family and friends. Mara is also an excellent character with great depth. I loved her poetry. Even though there was some sad parts, the ultimate message and ending was uplifting. I am sure that many people would agree, hurricanes (and other natural disasters) change lives forever. I would recommend this book!

    9. Mark Twain Nominee 09-10; Good, realistic book based on a historic eventa hurricane in the Florida Keys after WWI. Good opportunity to share history with studentsexplain history of keys, ecological considerations, etc. The story is realistic in that there is not a happy ending. Not everyone makes it out of the event alive. Has a theme similar to another great book of a similar topic (yet about a contemporary evente tsunami in Indonesia)--The Killing Sea.

    10. I really enjoyed this historical fiction account of the hurricane that hit Islamorada island in the Florida Keys on Labor Day Weekend in 1935. Extremely descriptive with both the time period and the Keys I could easily picture the events that were occurring. I very good read for young and old alike.

    11. Our latest chat and chew book. I liked how the book taught real history and facts about the Florida Keys and the Great Storm even though it was a fictional book. This book is not for the sensitive child as it does not have a happy ending but a realistic ending which gave it 4 stars rather than 3 for me. It is an easy read and a page turner but sad.

    12. Pretty typical historical fiction, well-written, about the 1935 hurricane that hit the Florida Keys. Made me cry, definitely, but I enjoyed reading it.

    13. This is a good story about making unlikely friendships and the strength it takes to survive when disaster strikes.

    14. I read this book to my fourth grade class and they absolutely loved it. It started up a conversation about how weather can be unpredictable as we went into our unit on weather.

    15. Pre read this book before giving to my ten year old. Loved that it took place in the keys in Florida. Interesting characters you can't help but love.
